Two decades before Bluford's flight, Ed Dwight was an Air Force pilot who trained to be the first Black astronaut. Whitney Young of the National Urban League urged Kennedy to push the Air Force to find and train the first Black astronaut. Dwight said the famed pilot felt slighted and not being included in the decision to train a Black astronaut. "All of a sudden we were able to hire astronauts who didn't look like the classic NASA astronaut," Bolden said. During his flight, Glover had a group call with Dwight, Bluford, Bolden, and other Black astronauts.

In 1958, two Air Force jets collided over Georgia, and one was carrying a nuclear weapon. He headed for the ocean, dropped the nuclear bomb from about 7,200 feet, and landed the B-47 safely. A B-47 Stratojet similar to the one that dropped the nuclear weapon near Tybee Island, Georgia. Between 1960 and 1968, the US military kept jets armed with nuclear weapons at the ready in case of a surprise nuclear attack. A series of near misses and serious accidents with nuclear weapons caused the Air Force to end the program.

Like Chuck Berry's guitar, Lewis' piano was essential in shaping rock 'n' roll in the mid-1950s. "Jerry Lee thinks that Jerry Lee is too wicked to be saved." His young son Steve Allen Lewis drowned in 1962 and another son, Jerry Lee Jr., died in a 1973 car accident at 19. In his later years he settled down but biographer Rick Bragg recalled interviewing Lewis for his 2014 book "Jerry Lee Lewis: His Own Words." "I don't think Jerry Lee Lewis had to exaggerate his life one bit to make it interesting," Bragg told the Atlanta Constitution Journal.
